How Long Do Perfumes Last?

Perfumes typically stay on the skin for three to twelve hours. But did you know that the best brands can last up to 24 hours? How long a fragrance lasts depends on two things: the concentration of the perfume and its molecular composition.

A perfume’s concentration, or the amount of essential oils or scented chemicals diluted in alcohol, plays a role in how long the scent will last. Generally speaking, the more concentrated the perfume is, the longer it will last.

However, the size of the molecules in the fragrance is what truly matters. Smaller scent molecules, such as citrus, tend to oxidize more quickly, making the scent fade faster. On the other hand, scents like musk, amber, and vanilla are more complex and have larger molecules, which means that they stick around on the skin for longer.

Tabbeau Place’s perfumes combine large aroma molecules with smaller ones to create complex fragrances that last much longer than most perfumes out there. The quality of the ingredients also makes a huge difference. Our organic, non-toxic, paraben-free, and phthalate-free fragrances are naturally potent and made from the best scents that nature has to offer.

How To Make A Perfume Last Longer?

As we've discussed in this blog post, we have tons of tips and tricks to help make your scent last all day. Here are a few of them:

  • Don’t rub your wrists. This will dull the top notes and change the smell of your perfume. Instead, spray the back of your hand twice whilst respecting the correct spray distance (about 4-6 inches from the skin). Leave to dry naturally and do not rub it in.
  • Apply perfume to damp skin after showering. It is best to apply your scent right after showering because damp skin locks in fragrance all day and prevents you from staining your fabrics. Be sure to apply the perfume directly to your skin.
  • Moisturize your skin. Apply a small amount of unscented moisturizing lotion to your skin. This will trap the fragrance so that the lotion’s scent won’t compete with your perfume.
  • Spray perfume on your pulse points. This includes around your neck, inside the elbows, behind your knees, the middle of the chest, and on your ankles. For even better results, don’t forget to also apply your perfume in your hair, in your belly button, down your calves, and on top of your ears!

Does Perfume Expire?

Perfume doesn’t last forever! Whenever you spray your perfume, air travels into the bottle, causing the fragrance to slowly oxidize. This is why most fragrances last about two years on average. After that, you are guaranteed to have a less potent scent. But can perfumes actually go bad? You may be surprised to find that they can!

An expired perfume may have a slightly sour or metallic smell due to the oxidization of the top notes. Another sign of expired perfume is a change in color, particularly if it adopts a yellowish hue or appears to be darker. If your fragrance looks or smells off and it’s past the two year mark, it may be time to throw it out.

You can extend the shelf life of your perfume by storing it properly. Avoid direct sunlight and store your fragrance in a dark, cool, and dry place. Pro tip: a refrigerator provides the ideal climate for storing perfumes!
